The Breathing Clock
This clock does not divide the day into twenty-four equal hours. It divides the light into six, and the dark into six, the way most of the world told time before machines. A summer hour of daylight is long. A winter one is short. Only at the equinoxes are they the same.
Equal hours are a machine convenience. Gears cannot flex, so the hour was fixed, and when railroads needed schedules the clock was cut loose from the sky altogether. Civil time coordinates freight. It does not describe where you are. Most people can no longer say, within half an hour, when today's sun rose.
Here the day begins when the light begins. The first hour starts at your dawn, wherever you are, and the count belongs to you again. High noon is not 12:00; the clock shows you where it actually falls at your longitude, and how it drifts through the year. Knowing when the sun is truly highest, and when the night is truly deepest, is the oldest kind of orientation there is.
The hours
Each hour of day or night is a koku, and each carries the name it has held for centuries: the hare rises with dawn, the horse stands at high noon, the rooster takes dusk, the rat holds deep midnight. Each animal keeps its element, with water in the depth of night, wood at dawn, fire at noon, metal at dusk, and earth at every hinge between them. A fourth face writes the old bell count at each hour boundary in Arabic numerals: 6, 5, 4, 9, 8, 7 through each half of the day. The needle you watch is drawn from white at its root to the color of the present hour at its tip.
The same twelve branches carry a second inheritance, from the physicians rather than the astronomers. In the 子午流注, the horary clock of Chinese medicine, qi makes one circuit of the body each day, and each branch is the flood tide of one organ: the lung before dawn, the large intestine at dawn, the stomach and spleen through the morning, the heart at high noon, the small intestine and bladder through the afternoon, the kidney at dusk, the pericardium and triple burner in the evening, the gallbladder at deep midnight, the liver in the small hours. The glyph button walks the four faces, and with the organs up the notes beneath the dial name the organ whose tide it is. Five of those organs house a spirit, in the physicians’ oldest reckoning: the 神 shen in the heart at high noon, the 魂 hun in the liver in the small hours, the 魄 po in the lung before dawn, the 意 yi in the spleen through the morning, the 志 zhi in the kidney at dusk; the notes name the spirit at its hour. The physicians reckoned by equal double-hours; this clock lays their organs over the wadokei's unequal ones, since the branches are the same and the sun is the older authority.
The bells
In Edo, time was heard before it was read. This clock rings the same grammar: three hushed sutegane, a breath of silence, then the count of the hour that is opening. Nine strikes at high noon and again at deep midnight, six at dawn and at dusk, and a single soft strike at each half hour. One, two, and three are never rung; those counts belonged to the call to prayer. The bell itself is a recorded temple bell, chosen by ear. And on the year's last night, if the chime is on, the clock keeps Joya no Kane: one hundred and eight strikes, spread across the final hour, the hundred and eighth falling in the first breath of the new year.
Beneath the hour
Edo time had no seconds. The hour divided into halves and thirds, and speech went no finer; the wadokei's balance beat once a second or so, but that beat was machinery, not time, and no dial showed it. The astronomers kept a decimal day of one hundred ke by water clock and incense trail. Below the minute, time was measured in flesh and smoke: the breath of about four seconds, twenty-one thousand six hundred to a day; the physician timing a patient's pulse against his own breathing; the temple measuring a sitting by one stick of incense.
Below perception, arithmetic took over. Buddhist scholars divided the day down through muhurta and lava to the chana, one seventy-fifth of a second, the indivisible moment, defined by division because nothing could reach it. This clock keeps the whole ladder: the bell speaks at the hour, the breathing heart at the breath, and in the small aperture at the very center a ring of light flickers at seventy-five pulses a second, too fast to see, so that only its shimmer survives. The depth of each flicker is set, minute by minute, by measured fluctuations of the quantum vacuum, relayed from a detector in Canberra. And twice in every breath, at the top of the inhalation and the bottom of the exhalation, the flicker falls perfectly still for a moment: the gap between breaths that the esoteric teachers watched, where form is suspended and the void shows through as stillness. Where the old ladder ended in doctrine, this one ends in a measurement of emptiness. Every element of the instrument follows the sun, the moon, or the calendar, except that one point, which nothing could ever predict.
In the dark between the hour band and the pulse stand two tetrahedra, borrowed from the maker’s Ring State instrument. A tetrahedron seen down the axis joining two opposite edges is a square; so one rests its four corners on the four cardinal governors, wood at dawn, fire at noon, metal at dusk, water at deep midnight, and the other on the four earth hinges between them. Together they are the star tetrahedron, and the dial’s eight governors are its eight corners. The depth is set so each solid is regular at the equinox; the sun deforms them through the year. The field’s breath leans them, and the day’s luminary, the seven of the week, chooses the axis they lean around: the sun and moon, Jupiter, and Venus turn the elemental one about a corner, Mars, Mercury, and Saturn turn the earthen one about an edge. They are invisible at rest and condense only at the turnings of the day: a brief glint at each half-koku, a crisp apparition at each koku handover, a longer one at dawn, at dusk, and at the change of the week; stillness softens every apparition.
The moon
The small moon on the outer track shows its true phase and its place in the month, standing with the sun at new moon and opposite it at full. In the nest view the moon becomes tonight's: a silver arc marks the hours it is actually above your horizon, computed from its real position, and the disc travels beside the time marker whenever the moon is in the sky with you. The lunar day is counted the Kalacakra way, by angle rather than duration: each day is twelve degrees of the moon's lead on the sun, named at dawn - so a slow day sometimes doubles, and a swift one passes without ever touching a sunrise, and the whisper says so.
Outside the lunation runs a second lunar dial, older than the phases: the mansions. The moon returns to the same stars every 27.3 days, two days sooner than it returns to the sun, and the astronomers of India, China, Japan and Tibet divided that circuit into stations, one for each night. This clock keeps the twenty-seven equal stations of the sukuyōdō and the Kālacakra, reckoned against the fixed stars, each named by its Chinese lodging and its Sanskrit name: 昴 Kṛttikā is the Pleiades, 心 Jyeṣṭhā is Antares, 角 Citrā is Spica. The moon’s sidereal place rides the outer ring; the station it held at dawn is the day’s mansion, lit and named in the notes. Watch the two moons drift apart over a season and lap each other every few years: the phases are the moon’s dance with the sun, the mansions its dance with the stars. Saturn walks the same ring in earth-gold, about a year to each station; the notes name its mansion beside the moon’s. Two more marks ride it, drawn as absence: open rings, colorless among the lit bodies. These are 羅睺 Rāhu and 計都 Ketu, the head and tail of the dragon: the moon’s nodes, the two points where its path crosses the sun’s, and the two shadow-grahas that complete the seven luminaries into the nine. They travel backwards through the mansions, one circuit in eighteen and a half years. Twice a month the moon enters one of them and the ring opens around it; when it does so at the new or the full moon, there is an eclipse, and the clock says so in the weeks before it comes.
The year
The year control opens an almanac. Slide through the months and watch the horizon climb the dial in winter and sink in summer, watch high noon drift, watch the moon lap the year and fall eleven days behind it each time, which is the misfit that once forced whole calendars to invent leap months. At the solstices and equinoxes the clock wears a halo for about a week: gold in June, blue-white in December, dawn-rose and wine at the two balances.
The quiet
Tap the face to fold the sky into the nest and back. Hold it for a moment and every word and number fades, leaving the band, the breathing heart, and the needle. The clock works without any of its labels. They were only ever a courtesy.
Tap the heart itself and a sitting begins: susokukan, the counting of breaths. The clock leads with the hour's own breath, a numeral rises and falls with each cycle, and at ten the bell sounds softly and the count returns to one. Touch anything, or look away, and it returns to one as well. As the count climbs, a pale moon spreads outward from the heart, one step with each breath; at ten, with the bell, it draws home and begins again. This is gachirinkan, the moon-disc contemplation, carried by the count. Nothing is kept. The return is the practice.
